Gen. Bomoi paid a condolence visit to the bereaved family in Ibadan, Oyo State.

Gen. Bomoi said when he paid a condolence visit to the bereaved families that no amount of money can adequately compensate for the loss of a loved one as human life cannot be quantified in Naira and Kobo. He added that however the NYSC Management would assist the families to reduce their pain and that the management was already brainstorming on how best to immortalize the three corps members.

NYSC AND THE JOS MASSACRE

The National Youth Service Corps Scheme was established in 1973 out of the nations desire to accelerate socio-economic development, foster national integration and unity after a bitter civil war that ravaged the country.

Since then the scheme has fair well not until the recent Jos massacre, especially the killing of 3 corps members (may be more) has generated reactions from parents, writers, teachers, and more. One will like to ask as the scheme lost its relevance? No! I think it’s the people attitude towards it over time that has changed.
I will like to share view from the national dailies with my readers. There was an article, of which Femi Orebe canvasses for a review of the NYSC scheme with the headline “THE JOS MURDERS AND THE NEED FOR A RE-EVALUATION OF THE NYSC on page 10 of the Nation newspaper of Sunday 21st December, 2008. One of the contributors said it has got to a stage where the yorubas must take a firm position and call for the cancellation of the scheme or change it to a Regional Youth Service Scheme.
The question is that if the scheme is being change to a Regional Youth Service Scheme will it still hold it purpose and essence? In view of this I will like to note that the fundamental objective of establishing the NYSC scheme is to help foster a sense of national commitment and patriotism, and to enhance national integration and unity. One will like to ask again that should the death of three corps members be a template for scrapping the scheme or for the debate of its continued existence? No! My opinion is that the perpetrators should be brought to book to serve as deterrent to others and the scheme shouldn’t be held accountable of any blame.
Another reaction generated from the Nigerian Tribune of December 24, 2008 with headline “CONRESS WANT NYSC SCHEME REVIEWED” with a call for comprehensive insurance policy for all serving corps members. In the article, the president of the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) comrade Peter Essele and the general secretary of the association calls for insurance cover for corps members to ensure they are not endangered specie. This call came as a result of the Jos mayhem that leads to the death of three corps members. TUC also call for a new orientation in the way we relate with people and wants the NYSC authorities and the National Orientation Agency to embark on embark on enlightenment campaigns on the objectives of the scheme to the grassroots people so that they don’t see the corps members as intruders or strangers but as fellow Nigerians who have come to help develop their areas.

With this matter arising, I am of a support that the NYSC authorities should embark on national orientation and enlightenment of the scheme’s fundamental objectives via the media; print and electronic. The enlightenment is of necessity most especially among the illiterates and the rural settlers. People need to know that corps members are graduates from the tertiary institutions serving in states other than their own and to contribute their own quota in term of man power development to areas posted to. They should be treated with respect, and rendered necessary assistance and support.
NYSC makes a lot of sense to me, and I say long live NYSC, long live the Ajuwaya spirit…NYSC will never die.

HIV/AIDS PREVENTION MESSAGE THROUGH ART

A background in science of Pet Adesina Bola (FIRE) and the creative prowess of Pet Adeniyi Olusegun (ART) KW/08A/1172, has in a great measure enhanced the quality of their Peer Educators Training at Playfair Memorial College, Oro-ago, Ifelodun L.G.A. Pet Adesina Bola (FIRE) studied Biochemistry at OOU, Ogun state while Pet Adeniyi Olusegun (ART) is a graduate of Fine and Applied Art Department, University of Benin, Edo state.
In one of their classes Pet Adeniyi Olusegun (ART) created illustration on HOW HIV AFFECTS OUR BODY SYSTEM. Pet Adesina Bola (FIRE) gave vent to it by a verbal explanation of the drawing.

- Our body is protected against illnesses (such as cough, diarrhea) by the immune system (white blood cell). Immune system known as the body soldiers, combat illness without alerting the body except when it gets too serious.

- When HIV enters the human body the first assignment is to attack and if possible get ride of the immune system. At the end it weakens and destroys the immune system and open chances to other diseases to come into the body.

- Without the immune system different illnesses will attack the human body and eventually kills.

Conclusively, HIV is a virus that affects human beings and causes a lowering of the body’s immune system. This makes it impossible for the body to fight certain infections. HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) is the infection while AIDS (Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome) is the disease.

THE ABC OF PREVENTION IS-
- Abstain from sex before marriage.
- Be faithful to your sex partner (mutually).
- Condom use (correctly and consistently) for casual sex.
- Do not share any sharp object such as razor blades, knifes, needles, clippers, toothbrush e.t.c.

MY ART, MY INFLUENCE: MY NYSC EXPERIENCE

Paintings, drawings and colouring can change a frown to a smile in kids, says Gary Chapman, MFA of the University of Alabama at Birmingham. “Kids today are so focused on technology” he explains. “It makes them feel great when they construct something they can look at and admire”
This is an unequalled opportunity the UBE section of Playfair Memorial College, Oro-ago stood to enjoy since when corper Olusegun adeniyi has been posted there.
Ever since then, the student has been able to maximize their potentials in art. Student could now imprint their name on their table, chair, and can even customize their shirts with their names.
The students have the exposure of working with colour for the very first time. The experience has been wonderful and rewarding as more than average of the student populace had improved on their drawing skills.
Above many other things it is high time we put effort in harnessing the creative ingenuity of our young lads. We need creative leaders for nation building and economic growth. Corper Olusegun adeniyi is not just producing artists but creative, innovative and responsible individuals.

PETS GET RELOADED!

The National Adolescence Reproductive Health care & Support, HIV/AIDS Prevention Project through NYSC has been described as the most comprehensive and successful HIV/AIDS prevention awareness programme in the world.

Just of recent, 6th and 7th November precisely UNICEF sponsored group of Pet members in Kwara State to a two days interactive section at C & S College, Sabo Oke, Ilorin. It was successfully facilitated by Emmanuel Olaoti (BOBO), and Nwabueze Thank God (TG). Of course the present of our mother, Mrs Obafemi added more glow to it. The incentive given to the PET members was encouraging. We ask for more!

HIV/AIDS PREVENTION RALLY/AWARENESS CAMPAIGN IN ORO AGO

November 7, 2008 witnessed awareness rally on HIV/AIDS precaution and prevention in Oro ago township. The rally which took off from the Muslim Community Grammar School and had the grand finale at the market square the heart of the town.

The rally was put together by PET Mariam Alhassan (KW/08A/2122) and assisted by PET Bola Adesina (KW/08A/ ) and fellow corps members, Okedinashi Josephine, Sedami, Gbenga Ayodeji, Thessy, Bimpe. PET Olusegun Adeniyi (KW/08A/1172) designed the banner for the event.

Speeches were given by PET Mariam Alhassan (KW/08A/2122) and PET Bola Adesina (KW/08A/ ). Corper Thessy cheers the event with melodious and educative songs. There was condom demonstration for the market women and okada people by PET Mariam Alhassan.
